History of Georgia

  • Georgia’s history is closely related to that of the rest of the South and the country in many respects. Georgia, however, is historically unique in a few ways since it is the largest state east of the Mississippi, the youngest and southernmost of the thirteen colonies, and by 1860, it was the most populated southern state.
  •  These cultures responded to the unique characteristics of their physical surroundings by developing distinct ways of life. Geographically and geologically, Georgia is in an unusual situation since it includes the Blue Ridge Mountains and two different coastal plains, those of the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico.  Georgia today’s pottery finds, which come in a wide variety, attest to this diversity.
  • The Mississippian cultures began to disintegrate with the advent of European explorers and settlers, and the ruins of numerous chiefdoms merged to form bigger societies, including those of the Creeks and Cherokees, both of which were crucial in Georgia’s colonial history.

Europe’s highest mountain range is the Caucasus.

  • The Alps are not the highest mountain range in Europe, despite what most people believe. Really higher are the Caucasus Mountains, which run along Georgia’s and Russia’s shared border. Russia has the highest peak, although Georgia’s highest mountain, Shkhara, at 5,193 metres, is still around 400 metres higher than Mont Blanc in France.

Georgia is not the only name of the nation.

  • Georgians call their country Sakartvelo. The name consists of two parts: Kartvel, which refers to an inhabitant of the central Georgian area of Kartli, and the circumfix sa-o stands for a general geographic identification meaning “place where the Kartveli live”. There are many ideas as to how the English name of the nation came to be, but the majority believe it has something to do with Saint.

Georgian is a distinctive language.

  • One of the most distinctive languages in the world, Georgian has its own alphabet.  The Georgian Orthodox Church is the only one to use Asomtavruli and Nuskhuri. But interestingly, out of the 14 distinct scripts that make up the Georgian alphabet, standard Georgian is based on the Kartvelian dialect.

It is renowned for its folk music in polyphony.

  • There are four significant varieties of polyphony: complicated polyphony, which is common in the region of Svaneti; polyphonic dialogue over a bass background, popular in the region of Kakheti; and contrasting polyphony, consisting of three largely improvised sung parts characteristic of western Georgia.

Georgia is home to two historic European cities.

  • The historic capitals of Georgia, Mtskheta and Kutaisi, are among the oldest cities in Europe. From 1008 CE until 1122 CE, Kutaisi served as the seat of the Unified Kingdom of Georgia, and from the 15th century to 1810 CE, it served as the seat of the Imeretian Kingdom. Mtskheta, on the other hand, is best recognised as the location of Georgia’s adoption of Christianity in 326CE and as the early Georgian Kingdom of Iberia’s capital.

It is a relatively unknown heliskiing location.

  • Gudauri, a ski resort in Georgia, attracts heliskiing aficionados with its plentiful powder, breathtaking scenery, and expansive slopes. Gudauri is a rapidly developing ski resort that offers all the advantages of major European destinations without the crowds. If you don’t consider yourself an adrenaline addict, don’t worry; Gudauri still has excellent slopes for intermediate and novice snowboarders and skiers.
