Hagia Sophia Throughout History

1. Hagia Sophia is still recognized to be one of the most significant buildings ever created. It was both a magnificent engineering marvel and a representation of the power of the Byzantine Empire.
2. Long before Justinian, Citadel has a long history. Constantine the Great extended the old city by three times its original size before shifting the capital of the Roman Empire to the city of Byzantium and calling it Constantinople. In order to accommodate new believers, the city needed extra land since a significant population was being relocated there. Alexius II completed the construction of a sizable cathedral near to the Imperial palace in 360.
3. There is little information available concerning the appearance or significance of this church. The fact that it is referred to as the Great Church suggests the colossal size and significance it formerly had. According to Roman and Holy Land churches from the fourth century, it was most likely a U-shaped basilica. After patriarch John Chrysostom was banished from the city in 404, this cathedral was demolished during the uprising. Theodosius II’s directive to start building the new church was carried out almost soon. Around 430, the name Galleries first entered usage. Architecture

• The Hagia Sophia, which has two semidomes on either side of the longitudinal axis and a massive main dome of 32 metres (105 feet) in height, blends a longitudinal basilica and a centred edifice in an entirely novel way.
• The Hagia Sophia remained unique, even though Justinian’s domed basilicas served as the inspiration for Byzantine architecture, and no attempt was ever made by Byzantine builders to replicate it. The structure is nearly square in design, but when viewed from within, it appears to be rectangular because of the large semidomes to the east and west that extend the effect of the roof.
• The windows in the curtain walls (non-load-bearing exterior walls) above the galleries and the base of the dome disguise the supports in the bright sunlight and give the appearance that the canopy is floating on air.
• The earliest writers all spoke of them in the highest terms. The Hagia Sophia is still standing, though, and for that reason it deserves to be listed among the greatest structures ever built.

• Mosaics were used to magnificently beautify over the course of several centuries throughout the Byzantine era. The Virgin Mary, Jesus, saints, and emperors or empresses were all featured in these mosaics. The oldest mosaics’ histories are unknown because many of them were covered over or destroyed during the Iconoclasm. The well-known ones begin with the restoration of orthodoxy and reach their pinnacle under the suzerainty of Basil I and Constantine VII.
• Numerous Byzantine structures, notably Sophia, were looted by Latin crusaders during the fourth crusade in 1204. Many exquisite mosaics were taken out and transported to Venice. The mosaics were covered with whitewash or plaster after the Ottomans took control of Constantinople in 1453 and converted into a mosque.
• The mosaics were discovered and duplicated for documentation during the brothers’ repair work in 1847. However, they continued to be protected until 1931, when Thomas oversaw the start of a for restoration and recovery.
